San Francisco

Est. 2009

Established in 2009, the San Francisco chapter of Project by Project (PbP) is committed to building a network of Asian American leaders dedicated to engaging in social issues that impact our AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community. We seek to provide a platform where AAPIs can find both solidarity in the strength of our shared experiences, and celebration of the diversity in our nuanced experiences.

The San Francisco area is deeply tied to the AAPI history of our nation. Whether it's our historic Chinatown created after the Gold Rush, Angel Island used as an immigration station, or the significant number of Japanese citizens relocated to Internment Camps - we cannot truly celebrate our Asian American heritage without first understanding the role our beloved city has played in shaping our cultures and communities today, which we greatly honor and on whose shoulders we stand to continue advancing our AAPI voice.

Project by Project San Francisco’s mission is twofold-- to uplift and enrich our Asian American community by creating a safe and encouraging environment; and to support our partner organizations in spreading awareness and demonstrating change. Our chapter upholds our core values in everything we do.

Our Values

  1. People First. Respect and trust is the cornerstone of creating a safe environment for our members to participate and engage, thereby allowing growth and development.

  2. Stretch. PbP members continually stretch their limitations and pride themselves on doing more with less.

  3. Aspire to Inspire. As leaders in the community, it is critical that our members maintain a philosophy of aspiration and empowerment. Our members challenge themselves and those around them to inspire change.

  4. Bring Something to the Table. PbP fosters an environment of collaboration and peer-to-peer learning. Our members are asked to be innovative and consistently bring value added ideas to the discussion.

  5. Take Ownership. Growth only happens when ownership is taken. We deeply believe in the idea of “our community, our responsibility”.

Our Members

Our steering committee is 100% volunteer-led and comprises of a diverse group of young professionals with expertise in technology, education, health care, marketing, and more. These individuals generously donate their time and talents to helping Project by Project’s initiatives and supporting our partners in any way we can, which can range from re-designing a website to delivering warm meals to members of our community.

PbP members are truly passionate about understanding what it means to be a minority in America and strive to uphold our core value of “our community, our responsibility”. In addition to working with our partners, we provide opportunities for hands-on leadership through self-development workshops and opportunities to take initiative within our organization. By working together through innovative philanthropy, self-development, and a lot of social activities, our members have built life-long friendships and professional networks along the way.

Our Partners

We take pride in building relationships with other Asian American nonprofits to raise awareness and funds for social causes that impact our community the most.

Each year, the San Francisco chapter selects a local non-profit organization to work with related to our yearly theme. Our volunteer-led chapter fundraises for our partner through events and provides pro-bono consulting, to assist our partner in digital strategy, operations, and more.

In tandem, we host events throughout the year to spread awareness about our theme and partner organization. Our largest event, Plate by Plate, is an annual tasting benefit we host to raise money and awareness for our partner. Our past partners include Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC), Chinatown Community Development Center, AAPI Equality Northern California, East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC) Florence Fang Community Farms, and the Vietnamese American Community Center of the East Bay (for a comprehensive list of past partners, see Partners).

Plate by Plate is Back!

Since 2011, our SF chapter ends the year with a glamorous tasting benefit, Plate by Plate, featuring some of the Bay Area’s most loved AAPI chefs and restaurants. Plate by Plate SF has sold over 3,500 tickets and raised over $250k for our beneficiary partners over the years. We will continue raising that number for the future.

Head over to PlatebyPlate.org for more information on our annual tasting benefit.

Restaurant Relief Fund

In light of COVID-19, we’re now giving back to the businesses that make Plate by Plate possible. The pandemic has hit the culinary industry especially hard, and many of our past Plate by Plate participants have been forced to let go of employees or temporarily shut down their operations.

We look forward to bringing back Plate by Plate when health and safety considerations allow it. Until then, we ask that you consider supporting the backbone of our signature event, by donating to the Plate by Plate COVID-19 Relief Fund, and also inviting your friends and loved ones to do the same. Donations are tax-deductible, and will help us aid the selected micro-grant recipients in their recovery.
