III. Our 3rd Annual Food & Wine Tasting Benefit

Project by Project's 3rd Annual Food & Wine Tasting Benefit will be held the evening of July 16th, 2005 from 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM at the California Science Center in the new and beautiful Wallis Annenberg Building. This signature event, co-chaired by Lee Hefter of Spago Beverly Hills and Kerry Heffernan of Eleven Madison Park, plans to feature premier chefs and wineries in a spectacular venue space. All net proceeds will benefit our partner, Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST).

IV. Volunteers Still Needed!

Please help victims of slavery and trafficking recover and become fully independent, self-sufficient individuals. If public speaking, grant writing, fundraising, teaching, sewing, or self-defense can spark your interest, please see the complete list of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are desired to assist in providing everything from vocational training to medical and dental assistance. Good with computers? CAST could use your assistance in teaching basic skills to recovering victims. Got a green thumb? The CAST shelter is also looking for people to help with their garden. There is a role for everyone who is interested in helping out. Don’t be shy! Please contact ngoc.nguyen@projectbyproject.org if you’d like more information. The people whose lives you touch will never forget your assistance and goodwill.

Another Volunteer Opportunity to Assist CAST

Our 2005 partner CAST, in collaboration with other community supporters against violence, is hosting "Rising," an exhibition featuring art by Asian and Pacific Islander survivors of violence. CAST is requesting volunteers to assist hosting an exhibit and reception for Rising. Help is needed to put together food and refreshments for the opening reception on May 25th, 2005 and closing reception on June 4th, 2005. All catering donations and Asian cuisine contributions are welcome. For more details and information on how you can be involved, please contact Heather Moore at heather@castla.org.

Asian Pacific Women's Center (APWC) Run

Thank you to everyone who participated in the APWC run on Sunday, April 10th at Griffith Park. APWC was PbP Southern California's first partner, and we are proud to continue to support our past partners as well as our present. Proceeds from the run will go towards raising funds for all non-profit organizations that provide services to victims of crime. APWC is dedicated to serving women and children who are survivors of domestic violence and to assisting survivors with their transition into independent living.

Better Luck Tomorrow: Asian Pacific Islander Americans in Hollywood.
For the third year, as part of Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month the Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) is excited to bring you a thought-provoking community panel discussion on one of the issues facing APIAs today. A very distinguished panel of speakers including Sonali Kohatkar (host of the KPFK radio program, "Uprising"), Tim Lounibos (motion picture producer and actor), Karen Narasaki (Executive Director of the Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium in Washington, D.C.), Ken Oak (musician, singer, and songwriter), George Takei (star of film and television series, "Star Trek" and community activist), and Lotay Yang (motion picture producer and Vice President, Bank of America Private Bank) will be in attendance. Daniel Mayeda (entertainment and media industry litigator and Pro Bono Legal Counsel to the first Asian American theatre group, East West Players) will be the moderator. A screening of "Casting Calls" (a 2004 Discovery Times Channel documentary) will precede the panel.

APEX 11th Annual Youth Olympics

APEX is looking for volunteers to help them with their 11th Annual Youth Olympics.

The APEX Youth Olympics draws about 150 children and 150 APEX volunteers with a goal to help inspire and motivate today's youth to excel in education, community and personal growth. The day is also filled with special guest appearances from local celebrities, sports teams, and musical entertainment.

Volunteers will be involved with assisting in the days activities with the SNAPY youths. The Service Network for Asian and Pacific Islander Youth (SNAPY) serves as the umbrella agency for 14 different youth agencies, most of which are affiliated with the United Way. SNAPY targets the needs of at-risk Asian and Pacific Islander youth in Southern California.

If you'd like to help, attend a meeting and get involved now. Check the APEX calendar for committee meeting listings or simply send an email to apexyo@apex.org.
