I. Asian Tsunami Relief.

Thank you for your compassion and contributions to aid the victims of the recent tsunami. From our tsunami relief drive, PbP has collectively raised over $3500 from both our Southern California and New York chapters for Give2Asia's Tsunami Recovery Fund. Give2Asia's Tsunami Recovery fund was created to address urgent mid- and long-term needs in Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, and Indonesia that have arisen since the disaster struck. Click here for more information about the Tsunami Recovery Fund.

Please note there is an IRS exemption for donations to tsunami relief: donations made in January 2005 towards tsunami relief will be eligible for tax deductions for 2004 (for those who itemize deductions). If you made a cash donation for tsunami relief this January or February, you can choose whether to claim the deduction for 2004 or wait and claim it for 2005. Thanks to all who generously donated to this cause.

II. Masquerade : 2005 Kickoff Event.

"It was enlightening to see so many committed individuals gathered for such a worthwhile cause." --John Chi, Dir of Marketing, tvK24.

Such was the prevailing sentiment at our Masquerade Kickoff Event, held at the Lladró Center Beverly Hills. Shining porcelain sculptures added a sophisticated touch to the evening, which was highlighted by keynote speakers CAST (Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking) Executive Director Kay Buck, PbP president Wendy Lin, CAST board member Kenneth Chuang, and Svend Ingerslev, Director of Lladró Center Beverly Hills. Guests were treated to delicious pastry desserts and wine distributed by our masqueraded volunteers. Attendees were also informed of this year’s chosen Partner and the meaningful cause of CAST, and were able to view a short film of the survivors at the CAST shelter. Many who viewed these testimonials walked out with tears in their eyes.

A heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, members, and attendees whose dedication, hard work and planning made our Kickoff Event a success. The evening went smoothly and we hope many people will continue to support our joint causes in future events.

III. Upcoming Events with CAST.

1.) Los Angeles Marathon & CAST: 3/6/2005

CAST is happy to announce the 4th Annual, Women Running Against Trafficking in Humans (WRATH) fundraiser that will take place on Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Los Angeles Marathon. Last year’s run was particularly special, as a CAST client completed the marathon for the first time with two staffs and a board member. The 2005 WRATH run is continuing this tradition, with a new client joining the team. She has been training hard since last fall to be able to complete the 26.2 miles in order to raise funds for CAST and its clients. This will be a great opportunity for CAST to raise our profile in Los Angeles and to draw attention and support to the issue of human trafficking. You can support CAST by either donating to their WRATH fund, or else come join PbP as we show our support for CAST and its clients by stopping by or helping out at the CAST information table at the marathon.

Please contact Jamie de los Santos at (213) 365-1906, ext. 10, or jamie@castla.org or Ngoc Nguyen at (714) 473-1020, ngoc.nguyen@projectbyproject.org for more information.

2.) CAST Volunteer Training Orientation Meeting: 3/12/2005

To kick off the partnership and help get volunteers in motion, CAST has graciously organized a volunteer training session especially for PbP! This is a great opportunity to learn more about CAST and how to volunteer directly with their clients at the Volunteer Training Orientation Meeting on March 12, 2005, from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. PLEASE NOTE: This is the LAST chance to attain training to volunteer at CAST. Volunteers interested in participating and assisting directly with CAST clients and the shelter are highly encouraged to attend this training.

Please contact Jamie de los Santos at (213) 365-1906, ext. 10, or jamie@castla.org or Ngoc Nguyen at (714) 473-1020, ngoc.nguyen@projectbyproject.org for more information.

3.) Freedom Network 2005 Annual Conference: 3/21-3/23, 2005

The Freedom Network USA is a network of organizations in the United States, including CAST, which provides services to trafficked persons in some of the major trafficking cases throughout the nation. This network actively promotes a human rights response to trafficking worldwide and in the United States. They will be holding its Third Annual Conference on March 21-23, 2005 at the Japanese American National Museum, to bring together academics, practitioners, social service providers, law enforcement, and government officials to discuss better ways of combating trafficking in the United States. Our partner CAST will also be presenting at this 3-day conference filled with a variety of activities including plenary, workshops, off-site visits, film showings, and awards dinner. For inquiries, please email: FNConference2005@yahoo.com.
