I. Message from Wendy Lin, 2005 President

Dear PbP friends and supporters,

Just days into the New Year, recent events have stirred the air worldwide with an urgent call to philanthropy. Project by Project shares in this spirit both globally and locally as we continue our fundraising drive for the Asian Tsunami disaster relief and as we embark on our 2005 partnership with a new community organization in need of assistance. Volunteerism, fundraising, and public awareness make the core of Project by Project, and this year marks a fresh opportunity to get involved in community service activities and events that can truly make a lasting impact here in Southern California. Whether you are inspired by the universal spirit of generosity or just have a desire to do good, I invite you to contribute your time and resources to support Project by Project and our 2005 partner this upcoming year.

Cheers,

Wendy Lin
2005 President

II. Recent Events - CSCYP Holiday Party - Thanks to all our dedicated volunteers!

The holidays are a time of giving and sharing and PbP volunteers continued this tradition last December. PbP continues to uphold our commitment to our past partners. The Chinatown Service Center Youth Program (CSCYP) was no exception. PbP demonstrated this by supporting their 2002 partner's annual Holiday Party in efforts to find toy/supply donations for their middle school and high school youth.

The CSCYP Holiday Party turnout was amazing with over 100 children participating in musical chairs, a Santa decorating contest, arts & crafts, and a small theatrical play while feasting on SPAM sushi and assorted Chinese dishes. The CSC staff reported that children loved the event and will remember the musical chair duels between many of their friends for years to come. Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who helped make this a memorable occasion for all involved.

III. Announcing Our New Partner for 2005!

J. Maillard, International Labour Organization

PbP Southern California is excited to announce the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST) of Los Angeles as our new partner for 2005.

Owing to the El Monte sweatshop case in Los Angeles County, CAST was established in 1998 to assist survivors of human trafficking and raise awareness of trafficking issues in the region. To expand its mission, CAST has built its first shelter dedicated to providing clients with training and workshops to help them become self-sufficient and independent individuals.

There’s a role for every person interested in volunteering for CAST. Volunteers are needed for the following areas:

• CAST shelter program
• Job training &
Professional development
• Life skills workshops
• Therapeutic workshops
• Development of marketing materials
• Web design
• Legal expertise
• Language translation for brochures

• Grant writing
• Fundraisers
• Solicitation for corporate &
  individual sponsorships
• Donation drives
• Public education campaigns
• Community outreach
• Medical assistance
(in-kind legal, mental, & dental services)

A background check and confidentiality/safety training would be required for volunteers who are interested in helping clients directly at the shelter. Please contact Namju Cho, Communications and Policy Director @ 213-385-5584 ext 25 or email namju@castla.org with any questions or for more information.

For additional information about volunteering with PbP and CAST, please contact Ngoc Nguyen at ngoc.nguyen@projectbyproject.org. Additional information about CAST can be found online at www.castla.org.
