I. Second
Annual Food and Wine Tasting Benefit.
|
|
| |
|
Thanks
to our all our supporters who made our
2nd Annual Food & Wine Tasting Benefit
on July 10, 2004 a
smashing success! Maryland crab tacos
with avocado and sweet soy glaze, Slow-Roasted
Korubatsu Pork, and Apricot Sorbet and
Hawaii Ice Cream were only a sampling
of the fine dishes served by our twenty-three
master chefs. Top wineries and purveyors
such as Robert Mondavi and Remy Martin
provided superb refreshments, and our
evening entertainment provided by Fox
11's Susan Hirasuna, ABC 7's David Ono,
and KCRW Jason Bentley and Liza Richardson
made for a spectacular night to remember.
All net
proceeds from the evening benefited
The DISKovery
Center, and will help
to provide affordable computer access
and training to low-income residents
of Little Tokyo and the greater Los
Angeles area.
An extra
special thanks goes to our volunteers
who worked hard throughout the night
to help chefs prepare food, welcome
guests, and assist in all the details
that made the night run smoothly. As
a 100% volunteer-run organization, volunteers
are the lifeblood of Project by Project!

II. Little Tokyo Service
Center's Tofu Festival.
On
July 24th and 25th, PbP volunteers staffed a PbP information booth and helped out the DISKovery Center's booth
at the Little Tokyo Service Center's 9th
Annual Tofu Festival. The DISKovery Center is
part of the Little Tokyo Service Center Community
Development Corporation (LTSC-CDC), and the Tofu
Festival is LTSC's biggest fundraiser of the year.
DISKovery students and PbP Volunteers worked hard
both days in the sweltering heat to prepare a
delicious tofu salad to sell to Tofu Festival
attendees.

III. Little Tokyo Walking
Tour Field Trip. |
|
 |
On June 6th, the DISKovery Center's June Aoki gave PbP
volunteers a walking tour of Little Tokyo. Volunteers
learned firsthand the rich cultural history of Little
Tokyo. The walking tour included stories of the historic
monuments and memorials that illustrated the struggles,
growth, and changes within the Little Tokyo community.
The tour concluded with a visit to the Japanese-American
Museum led by a knowledgeable docent who spent his childhood
in the Manzanar internment camp and gave his own personal
account of life as a Japanese-American in wartime America.
Thanks to all who attended! |

IV. Volunteer Highlight:
Jeff Huang
|
|
 |
PbP
Volunteer Team Lead Jeff Huang taught two classes,
Yahoo! Maps and Photoshop Elements, to students
at the DISKovery Center.
My
favorite volunteer position at Project by Project
was working along with the DISKovery center
teaching senior citizens about computers. Through
volunteering, I not only enjoyed the benefits
of helping others learn, but I was able to see
for my own eyes how I can bridge a gap that
I had in my life.
Growing up with
computers all my life, computers are a part
of my life. I believe many in my generation
can identify with that, as I spend countless
hours writing emails, chatting on AIM, and surfing
the net. However, my parents have never understood
why I use the computer so much. They did not
understand the benefits of one, and had a hard
time grasping the idea that they too can learn
how to use one.
|
| Volunteering
at the DISKovery Center, which caters to senior
citizens, helped solved the "Computer Gap"
that I had with my parents. After my parents learned
that many in their generation were learning computer
training at the DISKovery Center, they were able
to realize that it was possible for them to learn
as well and how they could apply it to their lives.
In teaching seniors how to use computers, I was
able to identify how I could teach my parents
to use a computer and was able to show them how
to remove red eye from family pictures or to book
a flight to China. If you have a few spare hours,
come volunteer to teach at the DISKovery center,
and I hope it can be rewarding for you as it was
for me. |

*Corporate
Relations Committee*
(Please contact chester.hashizume@projectbyproject.org)
PbP is looking for individuals interested in developing
relationships and partnership opportunities with corporations.
This volunteer
opportunity would require developing new corporate relationships
as well as existing corporate relationships. PbP offers
great corporate sponsorship packages to corporations.
In addition, any new ideas for partnership opportunities
with corporations are welcome as well. Good phone communication
skills is helpful. Most of all, these positions requires
someone who is enthusiastic about the potential marketing
opportunities that PbP has to offer to corporations.
*2005 Food and Wine Venue
Selection Committee* (please contact
mia.chan@projectbyproject.org)
PbP has outgrown its Food and Wine venue and is looking
for individuals interested in helping us search for
a new venue for our
2005 Food and Wine. This volunteer opportunity entails
scouting venues around Los Angeles and requesting a
proposal w. a quote and specs from the venue coordinator.
Venue searching is a great way to learn more about the
city you live in and discover new places in the city!
*Knowledge Management*
(please contact wendy.lin@projectbyproject.org)
PbP is looking for individuals to help us organize our
contact databases and photos. This volunteer opportunities
requires basic excel and windows skills, with a plus
if you have creative ideas of information organization.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about PbP,
our history, and understanding the details on running
a non-profit organization.
