IV. Partner Highlight: DISKovery Center Student Testimonial.

At first glance, Nick Romero does not look like the type of man who could once have been a welder. More artist than metal mender, Nick has a very interesting way of looking at learning. Nick was attending computer classes at a local adult school when he decided to give DISKovery a try, “What could go wrong?” Nick’s first classes were PowerPoint and a digital camera class. Nick quickly found DISKovery to be an “easy atmosphere to learn in.”
Nick says that he is fascinated by technology and he enjoys sharing what he has learned with others. Most recently, Nick was able to restore an old picture of his grandfather for his 87-year-old mother. “The picture was creased, discolored and folded, probably stuffed in a drawer somewhere.” With his new skills, Nick was able to bring the photo back to life and present it to his mother, who was overjoyed! As Nick continues to take computer classes at DISKovery, he is pleasantly surprised by what he knows now, "This is more than I expected to get out of the program. The computer has so many things it can do."

V. Union Rescue Mission Outreach Day.

On Sunday, May 16, a group of PbP Steering Committee members and youth from the Chinatown Service Center (CSC), our 2003 partner, spent an afternoon at the Union Rescue Mission shelter in Little Tokyo. The Union Rescue Mission provides the homeless with food and shelter, health services, recovery programs, education and counseling. The group assisted the Union Rescue Mission staff with preparing and serving meals to the homeless population as well as with cleaning up the kitchen and dining hall after the meal servings. The afternoon was a great way for PbP to maintain ties with its former partner, as well as reach out and give back to the community in a joint effort with CSC.
