Sign-up to be a Conversation Partner at the International Center

As a Conversation Partner, volunteers will meet one-on-one for an hour a week with International Center members helping them to build confidence in conversational English and to support their adjustment to life in New York. Other specialized language partnerships include professional mentoring partnerships and collaborative program language partnerships. If you are interested in volunteering as a conversation partner, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrate native English fluency.
  • The partnerships last 12 sessions, and volunteers should be able to commit a minimum of 1 hour per session.
  • Demonstrate an interest in and sensitivity to other cultures.
  • Use active listening skills.
  • Develop the content and structure of conversation sessions based on the learners' needs and language goals.
  • Appreciate the fact that the rewards of volunteering come from a partnership of equals sharing knowledge and culture.

The first group orientation will be held in mid-July. Exact dates and locations for the orientation are yet to be determined, depending on the demand. Please contact outreach.ny@projectbyproject.org for more details on how to get involved.

Dessert and Wine Tasting Benefit

On June 18, 2004, Project by Project had its First Dessert and Wine Tasting Benefit held in the Skylight Ballroom of the Puck Building. It was a fabulous evening featuring the finest desserts of nine top New York City restaurants and the delicious wines and spirits from eight vineyards and distributors.

Sandra Endo, Reporter for NY1, was the hostess for the evening. Over 300 attendees spent the evening sampling an array of decadent desserts. Guest also enjoyed the opportunity to meet with pastry chefs and representatives from the evening's restaurants and sponsors. A silent auction was on hand allowing the guests to peruse and bid on a number of gourmet and designer items.

Needless to say the evening had very sweet beginnings and endings. We thank all of our patrons, sponsors, restaurants, and beverage purveyors that helped make the event possible. The net proceeds of the evening will benefit our 2004 partner, the International Center.
