New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC)

The New York Asian Women’s Center was launched by a group of volunteers in 1982 as the first domestic violence organization to serve Asian communities in New York City. By helping women and children end violence at home, and at the same time, bringing domestic violence to the forefront of the Asian community's consciousness, the New York Asian Women's Center serves as a vehicle for placing the concerns of Asian women and children on the agenda for community change. Run solely by volunteers until 1987, the group has been organizing various outreach campaigns since its initial stages and has been providing shelter to women and children since 1985. In 1990, the Center set up the 24-hour Asian language hotline, the first of its kind on the East Coast. The Center has been honored with awards for the President of United States and the Governor of New York State as well as many women’s organizations for its exemplary work on behalf of Asian women and children affected by domestic violence.
