PbP LA Co-Presents ALMOST PERFECT at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on 4/30! PDF Print E-mail

Project by Project Los Angeles is proud to announce its participation as a Community Co-Presenter of the 2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF), presented by Visual Communications. PbP has been selected to Co-Present ALMOST PERFECT, a Centerpiece Presentation, from Director Bertha Bay-Sa Pan and starring Kelly Hu and Edison Chen. Not only is Visual Communications a big supporter of PbP-LA, but they are also a Past Partner (2006)!

From the LAAPFF:

Of all the directors who have made a grand entrance to the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival over the years, Bertha Bay-Sa Pan has stood out as one of our favorites. Pan, whose short film FACE was presented at the 1998 Festival, returned in 2002 with a dramatically fleshed-out feature-length version of her earlier film that was well-received and also announced her arrival as a filmmaker to watch out for. Since then, Pan has established her own production shingle, Slew Pictures, and embarked on a rewarding career as a music video director and producer. ALMOST PERFECT, director Pan’s first feature-length directorial effort since FACE, marks a maturation of her filmmaking skills while staying firmly grounded in her familiar New York stomping grounds.

ALMOST PERFECT opens on Vanessa Lee (Kelly Hu), a thirtysomething who runs a small non-profit in New York City with a family who can’t seem to function without her to bail them out. At 34, Vanessa is still her large and boisterous family’s go-to girl, with a threadbare excuse of a life of her own. Suddenly, she runs into Dwayne, an old friend (Ivan Shaw), the almost perfect guy who just might be perfect for her. But, as those sparks fly, her family starts to go up in flames. Her high-maintenance fashion designer sister (Christina Chang) is on the brink; her surf bum brother (Edison Chen) has gone AWOL; and her over-analyzing, over-intellectual mother (Tina Chen) has barred her father (Roger Rees) from their home, sending him into his own mid-life crisis. They all need Vanessa, all the time, to fix all the problems, much to the consternation of Dwayne, who’s beginning to get fed up with the whole deal. Trapped within one family crisis after another, Vanessa has decisions to make — be the family’s savior; or carve out some “me-time” and concentrate on possibly the best thing to happen to her in her entire adult life!

With a stellar cast anchored by Festival veteran Kelly Hu and a crack production team helmed by producers Derrick Tseng (LIFE DURING WARTIME; SNOW ANGELS; LONESOME JIM) and Riva Marker (THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT), ALMOST PERFECT fits seamlessly within the recent spate of urban romance features including the likes of PLEASE GIVE and THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, and arguably surpasses those more lauded efforts. Indeed, ALMOST PERFECT announces a grand return to the Film Festival for director Pan, and we are proud to showcase her latest
