Hamilton-Madison House is a nonprofit settlement house dedicated to improving the quality of life of its community.  Since its establishment in 1898, the House has expanded to serve over 17,000 children, adults, seniors and immigrants each year through programs including child and teen development services, senior services, Hamilton-Madison House’s Music School, ESL and computer literacy classes, and behavioral health programs.

The Saturday Program is an affordable, fun, and academically based program for children ages 5-12.  The Program operates Saturdays during the school year and includes Chinese brush painting classes, violin lessons, guitar lessons, Capoeira for teens, and Math Club and Literacy Workshop.  The House is seeking volunteers to tutor children in the Math Club and Literacy Workshop sessions.  Math Club is 11am-1pm and Literacy Workshop is from 1:30pm-3:30pm.

The Saturday Tutor will:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have mastered a minimum of a 9th grade level of education
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Experience tutoring is a plus

Volunteers can tutor Math, Literacy, or both.  The House is asking for tutors to commit to coming every Saturday until the end of the program year in June.  Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis and can be worked out with the Volunteer Coordinator and the Saturday Program Coordinator.

Forms and Links:

The medical form is required for all volunteers who will be working with children.  The form pretty much checks that you're up to speed with immunizations etc, but please note that the PPD test for TB does need to be current within the past six months, so sometimes people will need to make an appointment with their doctor to take care of this.

The Volunteer Application is something every volunteer needs to fill out.

2. HMH - Volunteer Application - Revised.doc (302 kB)

Volunteer Handbook - It covers what to do in the event of an emergency, general etiquette, what we expect, what the volunteer can expect, etc.  The back cover is a volunteer agreement signed by the volunteer, myself, and the volunteer's direct supervisor.  This agreement is only used when volunteers will be participating in ongoing positions, not for one time events such as parties.
